About Worden Pond
Worden Pond sits in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, formed by glacial meltwater as the last ice age retreated across southern New England. It is the largest freshwater lake entirely within Rhode Island, covering roughly 1,021 acres within the Chipuxet and Pawcatuck River watershed, bordering the Great Swamp Management Area. The basin is shallow and weedy rather than deep, with a maximum depth of about 31 feet, conditions that have long favored largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish over cold-water species.
Its broad, flat shape is a legacy of the outwash plains left by retreating glacial ice, and that shallowness has made it a longtime destination for bass anglers, including regulars from South Kingstown and Wakefield who launch from the state boat ramp on the north shore. Paddlers favor its roughly six miles of largely undeveloped shoreline, much of it bordered by marsh and forest rather than private docks, leaving long stretches where a canoe trip passes without a house in sight.
