About Lake Mohave
Lake Mohave formed in 1951, when the completion of Davis Dam backed the Colorado River into a reservoir stretching roughly 67 miles upstream toward Hoover Dam. The lake follows the river's old channel, narrow and canyon-walled near its northern end in Black Canyon, then widening into open water closer to the dam itself. It sits on the Arizona-Nevada border, named for the Mohave people who lived along this stretch of the Colorado long before the dam existed.
Bullhead City, Arizona, and Laughlin, Nevada, face each other across the lake's southern end, where casino hotels line the Nevada shore and marinas and RV parks line the Arizona side. Katherine Landing, near Davis Dam, is the main harbor for houseboats and fishing boats heading upstream. Striped bass fishing has long been a draw here, along with trout fishing, water skiing, and houseboat trips through the narrower canyon stretches toward Hoover Dam.
