About Stump Lake
Stump Lake sits in the Mississippi River floodplain near St. Charles, Missouri, close to where the Missouri River joins the Mississippi. Lakes in this bottomland typically trace back to old river channels left behind as the two rivers shifted course over time, then filled and separated from the main flow. The surrounding ground floods periodically, which has kept much of the area undeveloped and shaped the irregular, branching outline the lake has today.
At roughly 969 acres with about 18 miles of shoreline, the lake's perimeter is long relative to its size, a sign of the narrow fingers and backwater coves typical of floodplain lakes rather than a single round basin. Water in the area draws duck hunters and anglers working for crappie and bass, and the surrounding towns along the Missouri-Illinois river bottoms have long depended on the seasonal rise and fall of the rivers nearby.
