About Deam Lake

Deam Lake sits inside the Deam Lake State Recreation Area in Clark County, Indiana, a wooded stretch of the Knobs region a few miles north of New Albany. The lake was built by damming a creek to create a public recreation site within Clark State Forest, and it carries the name of Charles C. Deam, a Bluffton pharmacist who became Indiana's first state forester and a noted botanist. The surrounding forest and the nearby Charles C. Deam Wilderness in Hoosier National Forest were named for the same man.

The lake covers about 163 acres with roughly 3 miles of shoreline, small enough to paddle end to end in an afternoon. Indiana's Department of Natural Resources manages it as a family recreation spot, with a swimming beach, campground, boat rentals, and fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish; gas motors are not permitted, so canoes, kayaks, and electric trolling motors share the water. Most visitors come from New Albany, Borden, and the greater Louisville area for weekend camping and day trips rather than long-distance travel.

Why we cut this one
Deam Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Deam Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Deam Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 7 ft, 13 ft, 20 ft, 27 ft, 33 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 40 ft. The lake covers about 0.3 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Deam Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Deam Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Deam Lake.

Questions

Deam Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Deam Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Deam Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
