About Lake George
Lake George sits within the Miller Beach area of Gary, Indiana, close to the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The lake formed in the dune and swale topography left behind as ancient Lake Michigan's shoreline retreated northward over thousands of years, leaving a chain of low ridges and shallow water-filled troughs across the region. Miller was originally a separate town before Gary annexed it in 1918, and the lake has remained a fixed point in that neighborhood's geography since.
The surrounding Miller Beach area developed as a mix of working-class rowhouses and lakefront cottages, drawing residents connected to Gary's steel industry as well as Chicago-area visitors reaching the Indiana Dunes. Lake George is small enough to see across in full, and its modest depth keeps it warmer and calmer than the open lake nearby. Fishermen and neighborhood walkers use its shoreline path regularly, and the lake remains a local landmark distinct from the industrial image often associated with Gary.
