About Lake Manitou
Lake Manitou sits in north-central Indiana, formed by glacial retreat and left as a natural basin rather than a dammed reservoir. It has long served the town of Rochester and the surrounding Fulton County countryside, ringed by cottages, private docks, and a public access area maintained for boating and fishing. The name Manitou comes from the Potawatomi and Miami word for a great or mysterious spirit, a name early surveyors carried over when they mapped the lake in the 1800s.
The lake is best known locally for a persistent settler-era story of a creature living in its depths, reported by residents in the early nineteenth century and repeated in county histories since. Beyond the legend, it functions as a working fishing lake, stocked and managed by the state, drawing anglers after bass and panfish along with families in cottages that have passed through generations. Its shoreline mixes year-round homes with seasonal camps, a pattern typical of small natural lakes in this part of the state.
