About Lamb Lake
Lamb Lake sits in the unglaciated hill country of south-central Indiana, a few miles from Bloomington. Unlike the natural lakes scattered across northern Indiana, lakes in this part of the state don't occur on their own — the terrain is old, eroded, and never leveled by an ice sheet. Any lake here is built, not left behind, formed by damming a valley and letting a creek fill it in behind the wall.
The lake covers about 188 acres but carries roughly five miles of shoreline, a ratio that points to a shape cut by narrow coves and fingers rather than a single open bowl. Houses line most of that shoreline, set back on wooded lots along a small number of access roads, the pattern typical of a private residential lake rather than a public recreation area. Bloomington itself, home to Indiana University, is the nearest town of any size.
