About Sixmile Lake
Sixmile Lake sits inside the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest river-swamp system in the country, a few miles from New Iberia in Iberia Parish. It borders Lake Fausse Pointe State Park and connects into the basin's network of bayous, canals, and backwater lakes fed by the Atchafalaya River. The surrounding water is classic Louisiana backswamp: bald cypress and tupelo gum standing in flooded flats, with channels that shift depth and course as the river rises and falls through the year.
New Iberia grew up on Bayou Teche as a sugarcane and rice town settled by Spanish colonists and Acadian exiles, and that Cajun heritage still shapes who's out on Sixmile Lake. Fishing camps and small marinas line the accessible edges, used by bass and crappie anglers and by crawfishermen running traps through the flooded timber. Bass tournaments are held out of nearby Lake Fausse Pointe launches, and duck hunters work the same swamp in winter once the water cools.

Yes. Sixmile Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.
