About Breeds Pond
Breeds Pond sits on the Salem–Peabody line in eastern Massachusetts, a few miles inland from Salem Harbor. Unlike most ponds in the region, it functions as a working reservoir, part of the municipal water system that serves the city of Salem. That role has kept it largely closed to the public for generations — no boat launches, no public swimming beach, no marinas — while comparable-sized ponds nearby became summer-cottage destinations.
The land around it is wooded and lightly developed, threaded with informal trails used by residents from the surrounding neighborhoods of Salem and Peabody rather than by visiting boaters or anglers. Its value has always been civic rather than recreational: a protected water source sitting quietly behind tree cover a short drive from downtown Salem, known locally more as infrastructure than as a destination.

Yes. Breeds Pond is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.
