About Chebacco Lake
Chebacco Lake sits on the line between Essex and Hamilton, Massachusetts, a few miles north of Salem. The lake serves as a public water supply for the surrounding towns, and gasoline motors are not allowed on the water, which keeps it to canoes, kayaks, and small electric boats. Anglers fish it for bass and pickerel, and a brook connects it toward Essex Bay, historically used by herring migrating upstream to spawn. The shoreline is mostly forested, with a handful of access points rather than dense development.
The lake takes its name from Chebacco Parish, the colonial-era name for what is now Essex, Massachusetts, before the town was set off from Ipswich. Local shipwrights on the lake and nearby river built a distinctive two-masted fishing boat known as the Chebacco boat, used for inshore cod and mackerel fishing out of Essex Bay. The design was common along the Massachusetts coast before larger schooners replaced it. The lake and its boats share the same root name, tied to the same stretch of shoreline north of Salem.
