About Flints Pond
Flints Pond sits a few miles outside Lowell, Massachusetts, in Middlesex County, once the country's largest textile-manufacturing center and now a mixed industrial and residential hub on the Merrimack River. The pond covers about 136 acres with roughly two miles of shoreline, a size that keeps it off any state-park map but large enough to support year-round fishing and small motorboats. Like most ponds scattered across this part of New England, it sits in a basin left behind by retreating glacial ice, filled since by groundwater and runoff rather than a dammed river.
The shoreline is mostly residential, ringed by single-family houses rather than resorts or public beaches, so most of the boat traffic comes from people who live within walking distance. Anglers work it for pickerel and bass, the two species most common in shallow Middlesex County ponds, and canoes and kayaks outnumber powerboats given the modest size. Lowell's run as a mill city, and its later turn into a smaller city anchored by a state university campus, left the ponds around it quiet neighborhood waterfronts rather than vacation destinations.
