About Freeman Lake

Freeman Lake sits a few miles from Lowell, Massachusetts, a city built on textile mills along the Merrimack River in the 19th century. The lake itself is small by comparison, covering about 59 acres, and has functioned less as an industrial resource and more as a local recreation spot for the towns around it. Fishing and swimming access have long drawn residents from the surrounding neighborhoods, who treat it as a nearby retreat rather than a destination lake. Its modest scale has kept development around the shoreline limited compared to larger regional lakes.

At about 18 feet at its deepest, Freeman Lake is shallow throughout, with a shoreline of roughly a mile that keeps the entire lake within view from most points along its edge. That scale places it among the smaller lakes in Middlesex County, more pond than lake by comparison to the larger flowages elsewhere in the state. The combination of limited depth and compact shoreline means water temperatures respond quickly to the season, and the lake edges toward its banks rather than dropping off sharply. It reads as a local water body first, known mainly to the people who live near it.

Why we cut this one
Freeman Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Freeman Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Freeman Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 3 ft, 6 ft, 9 ft, 12 ft, 15 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 18 ft. The lake covers about 0.1 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Freeman Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Freeman Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Freeman Lake.

Questions

Freeman Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Freeman Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Freeman Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
