About Great Sandy Bottom Pond

Great Sandy Bottom Pond sits on Massachusetts's South Shore, roughly twenty miles south of Boston. Like most kettle ponds in this part of the state, it formed after the last glacier retreated, when a buried block of ice melted slowly and left a depression that filled with water. The pond covers about 213 acres, with roughly three miles of shoreline tracing its edge through wooded, low-lying terrain typical of the region's outwash plains.

At a modeled maximum depth of about 39 feet, the pond is deeper than many of its size class nearby, giving it a steeper drop-off from shore than the shallow, weedy ponds common to the area. It draws local anglers, paddlers, and swimmers from the surrounding South Shore towns rather than long-distance visitors. Its name is descriptive rather than promotional, a plain reference to the sand and sediment underlying its basin.

On the board
  • 52 roads engraved around the shore, 9 of them labeled
  • 6 depth layers, each step engraved with its depth in feet
  • Compass rose, title block with coordinates, max depth and area; keyhole hanger on the back
Why we cut this one
Great Sandy Bottom Pond is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

A Great Sandy Bottom Pond map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Great Sandy Bottom Pond for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Great Sandy Bottom Pond.

Questions

Great Sandy Bottom Pond map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Great Sandy Bottom Pond; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Great Sandy Bottom Pond is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.
