About Lake Chaubunagungamaug
The lake carries a Nipmuc name, Chaubunagungamaug, which passed to the Massachusetts town built on its shore, Webster, in Worcester County near Worcester. A longer form of the name, often rendered as Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaug, appears on local signage and postcards, paired with a folk translation about neighboring tribes fishing on opposite sides of a boundary. Linguists generally treat that translation as local legend rather than confirmed Algonquian grammar. The shorter form, Chaubunagungamaug, is the name used on older maps and federal hydrology records for the lake itself.
The lake covers roughly eleven hundred acres with close to fifteen miles of shoreline, broken into coves and points that keep the water within sight of town from most directions. Webster residents mostly call it Webster Lake day to day, saving the Nipmuc name for tourist markers and the water tower on Route 12. Water skiing has a long history here, with a local ski club running events on the lake for decades. The shoreline holds a mix of year-round houses and seasonal cottages, with the town center a short drive from most points on the water.
