About Lake Great Stone
Lake Great Stone sits in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, a few miles north of Lowell, in the belt of kettle and moraine lakes left across the region by the retreat of the last glacier. At roughly 722 acres and about 40 feet at its deepest point, it is large enough for open-water boating but shallow enough to warm through by mid-summer, with a shoreline that runs close to 18 miles once every cove and point is traced.
The lake sits within reach of the Merrimack Valley mill towns, and its shoreline mixes year-round houses with seasonal camps built up over generations. Fishing draws largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish, and the irregular shoreline gives it more coves and inlets than a compact, round lake of the same acreage would have, which is part of what keeps the water broken into quieter pockets even when the open sections carry boat traffic.
