About Lake Lorraine

Lake Lorraine sits in Indian Orchard, a neighborhood on the northeast side of Springfield, Massachusetts, in Hampden County. Indian Orchard began in the 1840s as an isolated mill village built around cotton and paper mills on the Chicopee River, and many of its early workers were French-Canadian immigrants. The village kept its own identity even after Springfield annexed it, with its own commercial strip and rail depot. The lake covers about 64 acres with roughly two miles of shoreline, small enough that most of it is visible from any single point on shore.

The lake's southern shore held Lake Lorraine State Park, a 3-acre property with a sand beach, swimming area, fishing access, and restrooms, open to the public for decades. Massachusetts closed the park to visitors in 2009, citing budget cuts, and left it unstaffed. The site was later handed to the Massachusetts Environmental Police, who use it as a satellite headquarters rather than a public beach. The surrounding shoreline remains residential, a mix of year-round houses, families, and retirees, with anglers still working the water by rod and small boat.

Why we cut this one
Lake Lorraine is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Lorraine depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Lorraine depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 7 ft, 13 ft, 20 ft, 27 ft, 33 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 40 ft. The lake covers about 0.1 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Lorraine map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Lorraine for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Lorraine.

Questions

Lake Lorraine map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Lorraine; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Lorraine is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
