About Lake Massapoag
Lake Massapoag sits in Sharon, Massachusetts, a town in Norfolk County about twenty miles southwest of Boston. The lake is a kettle pond, formed when a block of glacial ice broke off the retreating ice sheet at the end of the last ice age and left a depression that filled with water as it melted. Its name comes from the Massachusett language and is generally translated as 'great pond.' The lake covers roughly 376 acres and has about three miles of shoreline, most of it now lined with houses.
Sharon is a residential suburb of Boston, and Lake Massapoag sits at its center, ringed mostly by single-family homes. The town operates a public beach and boat launch on the lake, which is used for swimming, sailing, kayaking, and fishing; motorboats are restricted, keeping the water quieter than larger lakes in the region. Most people on the water are Sharon residents and visitors from nearby towns rather than out-of-state tourists. At around 40 feet deep, the lake stays cooler through summer than the shallower ponds scattered elsewhere in town.
