About Littleville Lake
Littleville Lake sits on the Middle Branch of the Westfield River in Chester, Massachusetts, about 25 miles west of Springfield. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the Littleville Dam and completed it in 1965, impounding the river as part of a flood-control system for the Westfield River watershed that also includes the nearby Knightville Dam. The reservoir covers roughly 222 acres with about four miles of shoreline, bordered by state forest land in Chester and Huntington rather than lakefront development.
Because it is a flood-control reservoir, the Army Corps draws the water level down each fall and winter, which keeps the shoreline undeveloped and limits permanent docks or camps. The lake is stocked with trout and holds bass and other warmwater species, drawing anglers from the surrounding hilltowns and from Springfield and the Pioneer Valley. Motorboats are restricted, so most traffic on the water is canoes, kayaks, and small fishing boats launched from state-run access sites around the lake.
