About Lower Naukeag Lake
Lower Naukeag Lake sits near Ashburnham, Massachusetts, just outside Worcester, on a body of water that covers roughly 277 acres with about three miles of shoreline. It connects to Upper Naukeag Lake, forming a two-lake system that has drawn summer residents since the late 1800s, when the surrounding hills first filled with camps and cottages. The name comes from a Nipmuc or Nashaway word, reflecting the region's long history of Indigenous settlement before European colonization reshaped the watershed.
The lake's moderate depth, modeled at around 40 feet at its deepest point, keeps it warm enough for swimming through the summer while still supporting a cold-water fish population in its lower layers. Year-round households mix with seasonal camps along the shore, and small boats outnumber anything larger, a pattern typical of the region's kettle and glacial lakes. Ashburnham's town center and its lake association have managed water quality and access here for generations, keeping the shoreline mostly residential rather than commercial.
