About Tully Lake
Tully Lake formed when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed Tully Dam in 1949 on the East Branch of the Tully River in Royalston, Massachusetts. The dam was one of several built across the Connecticut River watershed after the catastrophic 1936 and 1938 floods, designed to hold back storm runoff rather than to power a mill or supply a town. A smaller permanent pool behind the dam gives the lake its everyday shoreline, while the surrounding land stayed in Army Corps and state hands instead of being sold off for cottages.
Because the shoreline was never subdivided, Tully Lake is reached mostly by canoe and kayak rather than by private dock. A state campground run by the Trustees of Reservations sits on the lake and rents sites that can only be reached by paddling in, drawing overnight canoe campers, anglers, and paddlers heading upstream to Doane's Falls. Royalston and Athol are the nearest towns, both small and rural, and the lake sits inside a corridor of undeveloped forest that the flood-control purpose helped preserve.
