About Weymouth Great Pond
Weymouth Great Pond sits in Weymouth, Massachusetts, on the South Shore about twelve miles south of Boston. Like other kettle ponds in the region, it formed when a block of glacial ice, buried in sediment as the last ice sheet retreated roughly 15,000 years ago, melted and left a depression that filled with water. Massachusetts law has classified ponds over ten acres as 'great ponds' since a colonial-era ordinance, holding them in trust for public fishing and access rather than private ownership. At roughly 274 acres, Weymouth Great Pond falls well within that category.
The pond sits within a largely residential stretch of Weymouth, ringed by single-family neighborhoods rather than commercial waterfront. Anglers fish it for bass and other warm-water species, and the town maintains public access points along the shoreline for small boats, canoes, and kayaks. At about four miles of shoreline and a modeled maximum depth near 50 feet, it is deep enough to hold cooler water through summer, while its shallower coves draw most of the recreational traffic. As a state-designated great pond, its bed and waters remain open to the public even where the surrounding land is privately owned.
