About White Island Pond

White Island Pond sits in Plymouth County, part of the chain of kettle ponds left behind as the Laurentide ice sheet retreated from southeastern Massachusetts roughly 14,000 years ago. Blocks of buried glacial ice melted in place, leaving basin-shaped depressions that filled with groundwater and rain — the same process that shaped hundreds of ponds across this stretch of outwash plain between New Bedford and Plymouth. The pond covers about 247 acres, with roughly five miles of shoreline tracing an irregular border rather than a single round basin.

The pond has a modeled maximum depth near 36 feet, deep enough to hold a coldwater fishery in a region where most kettle ponds are shallow and weedy. Its shoreline mixes year-round houses with seasonal camps, a pattern common to ponds within reach of New Bedford, where families have kept camps for generations. Boat access, shoreline fishing, and swimming are the pond's ordinary uses rather than any single defining event. Cranberry bogs, a regional industry built on the same sandy, acidic soils, sit within the surrounding watershed.

Why we cut this one
White Island Pond is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

White Island Pond depth chart, in wood

This is a White Island Pond depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 6 ft, 12 ft, 18 ft, 24 ft, 30 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 36 ft. The lake covers about 0.4 square miles, and 55 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A White Island Pond map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on White Island Pond for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your White Island Pond.

Questions

White Island Pond map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of White Island Pond; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. White Island Pond is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
