About Whitmans Pond
Whitmans Pond sits in Weymouth, Massachusetts, a South Shore town settled in the 1620s and incorporated in 1635, one of the oldest in the state. The pond is classified as a great pond under Massachusetts colonial law, meaning it was reserved for public use rather than private ownership when the colony's ordinances were written. It sits within a mostly residential stretch of town, ringed by single-family houses and a public landing rather than commercial development.
Weymouth grew as a shipbuilding and shoe-manufacturing town through the 19th century, and its ponds served as local water supply and recreation for workers rather than as resort destinations. Whitmans Pond today draws anglers after largemouth bass and panfish, along with residents who canoe and kayak from the town landing. Its shoreline is almost entirely residential, giving it a smaller, quieter profile than the larger lakes further inland or up the coast.
