About Wickaboag Pond
Wickaboag Pond sits in West Brookfield, in Worcester County, Massachusetts, just off Route 9 in the central part of the state. The name comes from an Algonquian word, a holdover from the Nipmuc communities who lived in this stretch of the Quaboag River valley before English settlement in the 1660s. The pond covers roughly 319 acres, small enough to see across, and it sits inside a town that has stayed largely agricultural and residential rather than built up for tourism.
The pond is used mainly by local anglers and small boat owners rather than by a resort crowd. A public access point lets in trailered boats, and largemouth bass fishing is the pond's main draw, along with pickerel and panfish in the shallower coves. Roughly five miles of shoreline wrap around a mix of camps, year-round houses, and wooded lots. Depth varies more than the pond's modest size would suggest, with a deeper basin dropping well below the shallow, weedy margins that ring most of the shoreline.
