About Baldwin Lake
Baldwin Lake sits a short drive from downtown Minneapolis, one of the thousands of glacial lakes left across Minnesota after the ice sheets retreated roughly ten thousand years ago. At roughly 190 acres, it's small enough to circle by car in a few minutes and shallow enough, at a maximum depth near 35 feet, that sunlight reaches most of the lake bed. Homes line much of its two miles of shoreline, and most boat traffic stays local to residents and their guests rather than through-traffic from larger regional lakes nearby.
Lakes this size in the Minneapolis area tend to draw a specific kind of use: pontoon rides after work, kids fishing off docks, and ice houses appearing once the surface freezes solid in winter. Panfish and bass are the typical catch in lakes of this depth and size class, holding in the shallows near shoreline vegetation rather than in open water. Baldwin's modest depth means it warms quickly in summer and freezes early relative to the region's larger, deeper lakes, shaping both its fishing season and its ice season.
