About Big Marine Lake
Big Marine Lake sits in Washington County, Minnesota, northeast of St. Paul. Like most lakes in the region, its basin was shaped by retreating glacial ice at the end of the last ice age, part of the moraine and kettle-lake landscape that spans the St. Croix River valley. The lake borders May Township and lies near Scandia, an area first settled by Swedish immigrant farmers in the mid-1800s before the shoreline filled in with lake homes and cabins for people commuting to the Twin Cities.
The lake covers about 1,596 acres with roughly 13 miles of shoreline, but its maximum depth is only around 57 feet, shallow relative to its surface area. Washington County runs Big Marine Park Reserve along the northeast shore, with a swimming beach, boat launch, and campground. The lake supports a fishery of walleye, muskellunge, and panfish that draws anglers from across the metro. Its shore is a mix of year-round houses and seasonal cabins, with boating and fishing as the main draw rather than dense development.
