About Coon Lake
Coon Lake sits in Anoka and Isanti Counties, roughly 30 miles north of Minneapolis, near the towns of East Bethel and Stanford Township. Like most lakes in this part of Minnesota, its basin was carved by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age, then filled as the ice melted and meltwater collected in the low ground it left behind. The result is a lake with a long, irregular shoreline rather than a single round basin, spread across nearly 1,400 acres of surface water.
The lake has long drawn walleye and panfish anglers, along with a summer population of cabin owners and year-round lake-home residents typical of the Twin Cities' outer ring. Its shoreline runs about 14 miles, giving it more coves and points to fish and build around than its acreage alone would suggest. Depths stay shallow by Minnesota standards, topping out at roughly 31 feet, which keeps the water warm enough through summer for swimming, pontooning, and bass fishing alongside the walleye runs.
