About Fish Lake Reservoir
Fish Lake Reservoir sits in St. Louis County, Minnesota, northwest of Duluth. It was formed when the City of Duluth dammed local streams to build a backup reservoir for its municipal water system, a project that also produced the larger Island Lake Reservoir nearby. The dam backed water up over creek valleys and low ground, which is why the lake's shoreline runs to roughly 28 miles even though its surface covers only about 2,654 acres.
The lake draws walleye and muskie anglers, along with families from cabins strung along its coves and points. It sits close enough to Duluth that many who fish it commute out for an afternoon rather than a weekend. Public boat launches serve the lake, and the surrounding land stays mostly wooded and lightly developed, typical of the reservoirs the city built to secure its water supply in the early twentieth century.
