About Roberds Lake
Roberds Lake sits in Rice County, Minnesota, a few miles south of Faribault, in a stretch of the state shaped by the retreat of glacial ice roughly 12,000 years ago. That retreat left behind the shallow, irregular basins typical of southern Minnesota's lake country, and Roberds Lake, covering about 596 acres, is one of them. Its shoreline runs close to four miles, ringed mostly by year-round homes and seasonal cabins rather than public parkland.
The surrounding country is farmland, corn and soybean fields giving way at the water's edge to a mix of older cottages and newer houses built for full-time living. Faribault, the nearest city, grew up around flour milling and later manufacturing along the Cannon River, and families from town have used lakes like Roberds for fishing and boating for generations. The lake reaches a maximum depth of around 43 feet, deep enough to hold a fishery through Minnesota's winters without the ice-related fish kills that plague shallower lakes nearby.
