About West Vadnais Lake
West Vadnais Lake sits in Ramsey County, part of the Vadnais Lakes chain northeast of St. Paul, Minnesota. The chain, which also includes Sucker Lake, Vadnais Lake, Charley Lake, and Pleasant Lake, is owned and managed by Saint Paul Regional Water Services as a source reservoir for the city's municipal water supply. The lake borders Vadnais Heights, a suburb that grew up around the reservoir system through the mid-20th century.
Because it feeds a public drinking water system, West Vadnais Lake carries restrictions uncommon for a lake its size: no swimming, and boating limited mostly to fishing craft under watershed rules set by the water utility. Anglers fish it for walleye, bass, and panfish under state and utility permits. The surrounding shoreline is largely undeveloped park and buffer land rather than private lake homes, a direct result of its role protecting the water supply for St. Paul and the eastern Twin Cities metro.
