The lake

About White Bear Lake

White Bear Lake is a natural lake on the northeastern edge of the Twin Cities metro, covering roughly 2,400 acres between Ramsey and Washington counties. It became a fashionable summer resort in the 1880s, with grand hotels and a horse-racing track drawing visitors out from St. Paul by rail; much of that history is gone, but the lakeside town that shares its name remains a well-off Twin Cities suburb. Heavy regional groundwater pumping drew the lake's level down sharply in the 2000s and 2010s, a decline that prompted lasting changes to metro-area water policy.
