About Canyon Ferry Lake
Canyon Ferry Lake was formed in 1954 when Canyon Ferry Dam closed on the Missouri River east of Helena, and it remains Montana's third-largest body of water at about 33,500 acres. The lake takes its name from an old ferry crossing on the river that predated the dam, and its open, windswept water has made it one of the best sailing and windsurfing lakes in the state. Broadwater and Lewis and Clark counties share its shoreline, and it sits close enough to Helena for an after-work boat launch.
