About Hebgen Lake
Hebgen Lake was formed in 1915 when Hebgen Dam closed on the Madison River northwest of Yellowstone, built to regulate irrigation flows downstream. On the night of August 17, 1959, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake centered nearby cracked the dam and triggered a massive landslide just below it that dammed the river again, creating Quake Lake and killing 28 campers; the dam itself held. Today the lake is a popular fly-fishing and boating destination near West Yellowstone, its surface often glassy at dawn against the Madison Range.
