About Canadarago Lake
Canadarago Lake lies in Otsego County, New York, roughly 20 miles northwest of Utica, between the villages of Richfield Springs and Schuyler Lake. The lake occupies a basin shaped by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age. It covers about 1,875 acres, holds close to 9 miles of shoreline, and reaches a modeled maximum depth of about 96 feet. Its north end sits closest to Richfield Springs, once a well-known mineral-springs resort town, while Schuyler Lake anchors the south shore.
The lake has long been a summer and ice-fishing destination, stocked by New York State with muskellunge and known among anglers for tiger muskie in particular. Its shoreline carries a mix of older cottages alongside newer year-round homes, with public access near both the Richfield Springs and Schuyler Lake ends. Sailing and small powerboats are common on the open water, and winter draws ice fishermen and skaters once the lake locks up. The surrounding towns remain small, rural, and largely agricultural, with the lake itself the main draw for weekend visitors from the Mohawk Valley and beyond.
