About Ellis Pond

Ellis Pond lies in Dutchess County, New York, a few miles from Poughkeepsie in the mid-Hudson Valley. The region's terrain was shaped by the retreat of glacial ice more than ten thousand years ago, which left behind the small ponds, low ridges, and irregular drainage that still mark the Dutchess County landscape today. Against that backdrop, Ellis Pond is a modest body of water, covering roughly 59 acres with about two miles of shoreline and a maximum depth estimated near 34 feet.

Poughkeepsie anchors the surrounding area as the seat of Dutchess County, a city that has long served as a hub for the smaller towns and farmland around it. Ellis Pond sits apart from that main corridor, the kind of water that draws local residents more than visitors passing through — anglers working the bank, paddlers crossing early, neighbors who know it by name rather than by reputation. At under 60 acres, it functions less as a destination and more as a fixture for the handful of roads that run along its edge.

Why we cut this one
Ellis Pond is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Ellis Pond depth chart, in wood

This is a Ellis Pond depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 6 ft, 11 ft, 17 ft, 23 ft, 28 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 34 ft. The lake covers about 0.1 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Ellis Pond map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Ellis Pond for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Ellis Pond.

Questions

Ellis Pond map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Ellis Pond; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Ellis Pond is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
