About Glenmere Lake
Glenmere Lake sits in south-central Orange County, New York, in and around the Village of Florida. It began as a colonial-era millpond, built to power local mills, and was later dammed and expanded into a reservoir. The lake now serves as the primary water supply for the Village of Florida and for certain Orange County facilities. Its basin mixes open water with hardwood swamp, shale ridgelines, and marsh, making it shallow and weedy in long stretches rather than uniformly deep.
In 1911, real estate developer Robert Wilson Goelet built Glenmere Mansion on an estate above the lake, in the Sugar Loaf section of the town of Chester. The mansion later became a hotel and event venue, drawing visitors to the shoreline for weddings and dinners. Away from the mansion grounds, the lake's marsh and bog edges host the largest known New York population of the northern cricket frog, a state-listed endangered species. Anglers and paddlers share the lake with year-round residents of Florida and Chester, small towns in Orange County's rural southwest corner.
