About Lake Carmel

Lake Carmel sits in Putnam County, New York, roughly 60 miles north of New York City and southeast of Poughkeepsie. The hamlet along its shore carries the lake's name. Houses line most of its four miles of shoreline, many built originally as summer cottages before the area filled in with year-round residents commuting toward the city. The lake covers about 183 acres. A private lake association manages docks, access, and the swimming and fishing residents use it for, rather than any state or county park system.

Modeled depth reaches about 53 feet in a basin fed by small streams draining the surrounding hills; the figure comes from a depth model rather than a full bathymetric survey. Most of the shoreline is private property, so boat traffic is largely limited to residents and their guests rather than day-trippers. Over the decades the community has shifted from a summer-cottage colony to a year-round suburb, with residents split between people who grew up on the lake and newer commuter families drawn by the drive time to both Poughkeepsie and New York City.

Why we cut this one
Lake Carmel is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Carmel depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Carmel depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 9 ft, 18 ft, 27 ft, 35 ft, 44 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 53 ft. The lake covers about 0.3 square miles, and 122 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Carmel map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Carmel for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Carmel.

Questions

Lake Carmel map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Carmel; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Carmel is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
