The lake

About Lake Mahopac

Lake Mahopac covers 587 acres in the town of Carmel, Putnam County, New York, about an hour north of New York City. The New York and Harlem Railroad turned it into a summer resort in the mid-1800s, with hotels running horse-drawn coach races to meet the trains; the hotels are gone, but the year-round lake community they left behind remains. Three private islands sit in the lake, including Petre Island's Massaro House, built in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The lake still holds a fishing record — a world-record brown bullhead came out of it in 2009 — and two marinas keep it busy with boats all summer.
