About Lake Panamoka
Lake Panamoka sits in Suffolk County on Long Island, within the Town of Brookhaven near Ridge, New York. Like most of Long Island's freshwater lakes, it formed as a kettle pond: a block of ice buried in glacial outwash during the retreat of the Wisconsin ice sheet, which melted in place and left a depression that filled with groundwater. The surrounding terrain is part of Long Island's outwash plain, sandy and pine-barren, typical of the belt of small kettle lakes strung across the island's middle.
At 44 acres with a shoreline of roughly a mile, Lake Panamoka is small compared to Long Island's larger lakes, but its reported depth of about 54 feet is deep for a pond of that size, consistent with the steep-sided, plunging shape typical of kettle holes. Houses ring the shore closely, part of the hamlet that took the lake's name. The lake developed as a private community water body serving the homes built around it rather than as a public recreation destination, and it remains primarily residential today.
