About Lake Sebago
Lake Sebago sits inside Harriman State Park, a Palisades Interstate Park Commission property in Rockland County, New York, formed by damming a stream in the Ramapo hills as the park's reservoir system was built out in the early twentieth century. The lake lies within an hour of the George Washington Bridge and roughly fifteen miles from Paterson, New Jersey, making it one of the closer wooded lakes to the New York metro area rather than a remote Adirondack drive.
The lake is known for its cabin colony, built by Civilian Conservation Corps crews and still run by the park system as a summer rental camp, drawing families and youth groups rather than second-home owners. Canoeing, kayaking, and shoreline fishing are the main uses, with motorboats restricted, and the surrounding trail network connects to the rest of Harriman's hiking system. At about 259 acres with six miles of shoreline, it reads as a mid-size reservoir rather than a headline lake, shaped by the ridges it was dammed into.
