About Lake Tiorati
Lake Tiorati lies inside Harriman State Park, about 25 miles north of Paterson, New Jersey, in the highlands west of the Hudson River. The lake sits along Seven Lakes Drive, a road built by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to link the park's chain of reservoirs for public recreation. It covers about 259 acres and holds roughly three miles of shoreline, with a maximum depth near 94 feet. The surrounding hills are part of the same ridge system the Appalachian Trail follows on its route between Georgia and Maine.
A public beach on the lake has drawn swimmers from New York City and northern New Jersey for generations, reached by car along Seven Lakes Drive or on foot from nearby trailheads. Scout troops and youth camps have used the woods around the lake for organized outings for decades. Hikers on the Appalachian Trail pass within sight of the water as the trail crosses this stretch of Harriman State Park. The lake remains one of the more visited stops in the park's reservoir system, especially in summer.
