About Little Long Pond
Little Long Pond sits in the New York highlands a few miles north of the New Jersey line, in the belt of small lakes and reservoirs that stretches through Orange and Rockland Counties. At roughly 42 acres, it is one of many glacially carved ponds left behind across this stretch of the Hudson Highlands, where thin soil and exposed granite kept the surrounding land undeveloped long after Paterson grew into a mill city downstream.
The pond's narrow, elongated shape gives it its name and keeps its mile of shoreline mostly wooded, with second-growth oak and hemlock running down to the waterline. Anglers fish it for bass and panfish, and the surrounding hills draw hikers up from the lowland towns on weekends. Its modest depth, reaching about 42 feet, is typical for a kettle or highland pond of this size rather than a dammed reservoir built for water supply.
