About Sleepy Hollow Lake
Sleepy Hollow Lake is a private, man-made lake in Greene County, New York, a short drive from Albany. Built in the 1960s as the centerpiece of a planned residential community, it was formed by damming a stream valley in the hills west of the Hudson River. Homes and cottages line much of its six miles of shoreline, and the surrounding land is organized as a private community with its own roads and services.
The lake sits inside Athens, a town whose historic core still faces the Hudson River docks and the Catskill Mountains beyond. Residents reach the lake through a gated association rather than public boat launches, and use is mostly limited to members and their guests. At 247 acres it is midsized for the region, and its 57-foot maximum depth is enough to keep water cool through the summer for swimming, fishing, and small boats.
