About Stillwater Pond

Stillwater Pond sits in Dutchess County in New York's Hudson Valley, a few miles from Poughkeepsie. The pond covers about 42 acres, with roughly a mile of shoreline and a maximum depth near 31 feet. Like much of the surrounding landscape, the valley was shaped by glaciers that retreated from the region roughly 15,000 years ago, leaving behind the rolling hills, wetlands, and small water bodies that mark much of Dutchess County today. Its modest size sets it apart from the larger recreational lakes elsewhere in the county, keeping it quieter and less developed along its edges.

Poughkeepsie, the seat of Dutchess County, anchors the region along the Hudson River, and the countryside around Stillwater Pond mixes farmland, woodlots, and low-density residential lots typical of the mid-Hudson Valley. A pond this size, with about a mile of shoreline, supports small boats, canoes, and kayaks more than motorized traffic, and it draws mostly local anglers and residents with lake access rather than public beach crowds. The mid-Hudson Valley has long combined agriculture with commuter access to New York City, and small ponds scattered through Dutchess County like this one remain mostly private and low-key compared to the region's larger, more developed lakes.

Why we cut this one
Stillwater Pond is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Stillwater Pond depth chart, in wood

This is a Stillwater Pond depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 5 ft, 10 ft, 15 ft, 21 ft, 26 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 31 ft. The lake covers about 0.1 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Stillwater Pond map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Stillwater Pond for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Stillwater Pond.

Questions

Stillwater Pond map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Stillwater Pond; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Stillwater Pond is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
