About Tuxedo Lake
Tuxedo Lake sits inside Tuxedo Park, a village Pierre Lorillard IV built starting in 1886 on land in Orange County, New York, about forty miles northwest of New York City. Lorillard, heir to a tobacco fortune, hired architects and landscape designers to lay out a private hunting and fishing club around the lake, with a stone gatehouse controlling entry from the start. The dinner jacket worn by club members at an autumn ball is credited with giving the word "tuxedo" to American English.
The lake remains private, held by the Tuxedo Club and surrounding homeowners, with no public boat launch or shoreline access. Its roughly four miles of shoreline wrap wooded hills near the New York-New Jersey line, within commuting range of Paterson, New Jersey and Manhattan. Houses along the water range from early-1900s stone cottages to newer construction, many held by longtime member families rather than short-term owners. The lake covers about 279 acres and reaches a modeled depth near 55 feet.
