About Upper Saranac Lake
Upper Saranac Lake sits in the Adirondack Park in Franklin County, New York, at the head of the Saranac Lakes chain that continues downstream through Middle Saranac and Lower Saranac Lake toward the village of Saranac Lake. It is the largest of the three, with roughly 41 miles of shoreline and a surface near 4,552 acres. The lake lies near Tupper Lake to the west and Plattsburgh to the northeast, ringed mostly by state forest preserve land and private camps, with several islands owned by the state and open to camping.
In the late nineteenth century, wealthy families from New York City and other cities built rustic-style summer retreats along the shoreline, part of the same Gilded Age building wave that produced the Adirondack Great Camp style elsewhere in the region. Guides once ferried guests by Adirondack guideboat, a design built for the region's shallow, island-studded lakes, and the boats are still raced on the lake today. The surrounding land mixes public forest preserve with long-held private family camps, and the lake remains used mainly for boating, fishing, and seasonal residence.
