About Michael J Kirwan Reservoir
Michael J Kirwan Reservoir sits on the West Branch of the Mahoning River in Portage and Trumbull counties, Ohio, formed when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed the river as a flood-control and water-supply project. The surrounding land became West Branch State Park. The reservoir is named for Michael J. Kirwan, a U.S. Representative from Youngstown who served more than three decades in Congress and chaired the House Appropriations subcommittee that funded Army Corps public works projects nationwide.
The reservoir stretches about 23 miles of shoreline over roughly 2,224 acres, its shape tracing the old river valley rather than a single round basin. It runs shallow for a reservoir its size, with a modeled maximum depth near 59 feet. It draws boaters, muskellunge and bass anglers, and hunters using the state park land around it, with towns like Ravenna and Newton Falls nearby and Youngstown a short drive east.
