The lake

About Beltzville Lake

Beltzville Lake was built by the Army Corps of Engineers on Pohopoco Creek in Carbon County as a flood-control project; the village of Big Creek Valley was vacated in 1966 to make way for it, and the surrounding state park opened in 1972. The lake covers 949 acres with nearly 20 miles of shoreline, five miles east of Lehighton. It's one of the more open, boat-friendly lakes in the region — straight-stack inboard exhausts are banned and speeds up to 45 miles per hour are allowed — and it draws steady bass, walleye and trout fishing along with 15 miles of shoreline hiking trails.
