The lake

About Blue Marsh Lake

Blue Marsh Lake was built by the Army Corps of Engineers northwest of Reading, damming Tulpehocken Creek; construction began in 1974 and the lake was filled by 1979 as part of Delaware River basin flood control. It covers 1,147 acres in western Berks County, submerging the old village of Blue Marsh, once known as Pleasant Valley and settled since the 1700s — the Gruber Wagon Works building was moved to safety before the water rose and can still be visited nearby. A single large island sits near the lake's center. Swimming, fishing, boating and 36 miles of shoreline trails make it one of Berks County's main recreation spots.

Blue Marsh Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.
