About Glendale Lake
Glendale Lake sits inside Prince Gallitzin State Park in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, about 25 miles north of Altoona. The dam across Glendale Run was completed in 1962, flooding a valley of farmland and second-growth forest to form the reservoir. It covers roughly 1,600 acres, with a shoreline that runs close to 22 miles as it follows the original stream channels into coves and points. The park was later named for Demetrius Gallitzin, a Catholic priest who served as a missionary among Cambria County's early settlers in the early 1800s, working out of nearby Loretto.
Boaters and anglers from Patton and Ashville use the lake for bass, muskellunge, and panfish, and the state park runs a swimming beach and campground along its shore. The lake's shape follows the flooded stream valley rather than a single round basin, branching into narrower arms where feeder streams once ran. Depth increases toward the dam, where modeled estimates put the bottom near 121 feet, while the upper coves stay shallow enough to warm quickly in summer. Winters on the Allegheny Plateau are cold enough that the lake regularly freezes over, and ice fishing shanties appear on the surface by mid-January.
